The MDM-DRUK printing house has developed a technology, unique in the world, which makes it possible to protect printouts from forgery.
HQSM Technology
The name "HQSM" comes from the first letters of the English words High Quality Safe Microprint.
High quality and safe microprint
But this is not simply, as you might think, an application of the fine print found on banknotes. The technology we have created allows us to go a step further, even deeper into the very technique of image reproduction. We can encode a single element, an "atom" of the image, or simply a raster point. A microprint in its assumptions consists of a greater or lesser number of raster points, so in standard technologies it is possible to forge or counterfeit it. In our solution, the information carrier is not the print itself, but the technique of its making.
Counterfeiting is one of the fastest growing economic crimes in the world. It threatens the economies of both developed and developing countries, damages new investment and increasingly endangers public health and safety.
Advances in technology mean that counterfeiters have become more sophisticated. A huge range of goods are now counterfeited, from clothing and pharmaceuticals, food, to automotive and agrochemical parts. Counterfeiting includes goods intended to imitate items or services provided by well-known brands or manufacturers. Criminals seek to trick consumers into believing that the product they are buying is genuine, when in fact it is an inferior counterfeit or a product that has not been approved for sale by the brand owner. This definition includes look-alike goods, which aim to mislead the consumer by using brand names and packaging that look very similar to the original products.
In today's market for goods and products, branding plays a very important role. Manufacturers devote considerable financial resources and effort to ensure that their products are recognisable and have positive associations. A well-promoted, but at the same time proven and known for good quality brand is always a tasty morsel for all kinds of counterfeiters, who pretend to be a recognised manufacturer and offer other goods, often much cheaper and of lower quality. According to the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), counterfeits account for 10% of global trade and are growing at 15.6% per year. The counterfeit market is estimated to be worth USD 1.8 trillion. In order to protect their interests - both their own and those of potential buyers - manufacturers strive to use various types of safeguards to uncover fraud, as in the era of advances in printing technology, fake packaging can be difficult for consumers to distinguish from the original.
Statistics show that the problem of such illegal imitation is not so small. Research by the European Brand Association, carried out in 21 countries, found that nearly a third of businesses had dealt with products similar to the original. Half of them had initiated measures to stop this kind of behaviour.
Research shows that such a fight is justified. According to marketing information, almost half of consumers had a very serious intention of buying a 'counterfeit' product. Most often they did not realise that they were reaching for an imitation.
It is estimated that around 50% of medicines offered on the Internet are fakes. According to the WHO, every hundredth drug on the Polish market is counterfeit, and Poles spend PLN 100 million a year on fakes. On a global scale, the value of the black market in counterfeit medicines reaches USD 200 billion. Interpol indicates that approximately one million people die every year as a result of taking counterfeit medicines.
Parallel trade is driven by different prices in different geographical markets. The original product is introduced from one market to another without the brand owner's consent, often undercutting its distribution network. Sometimes this is done to avoid paying higher taxes. The internet has created a global marketplace and made it harder for brand owners to control where their goods are sold. Many people who do not want a counterfeit product will buy the original item at a discount.
With HQSM technology, any manufacturer will be able to trace the distribution of their goods, as they will know when and where they were produced.
Companies around the world are making increasing efforts to reduce their environmental impact. Reaching for paper from certified sources, using less toxic inks or energy-efficient machines - these are the basics of the natural economy in printing. Unfortunately, green printing does not mean that it is cheaper. Nevertheless, it is becoming increasingly important for those ordering productions.
Many chemical compounds are used in the printing process. The basic ones are the ink and all the components needed for its correct application on the sheet. These are mainly water, alcohol and buffer - a solution whose pH hardly changes when small quantities of strong acids or bases are added or when diluted with water. It is a mixture of a weak acid and its salt with a strong base, or a mixture of a weak base and its salt with a strong acid.
The amount of paint used determines how much of the remaining chemical components are used. Thanks to HQSM technology, we have been able to reduce paint consumption by up to 16% on average! This is of great benefit to the environment, and the reduced consumption of water allows for more conscious management of this precious raw material, which is becoming scarce in our country due to climate change.
In the printing process, a very important element is also the amount of paper or, in the case of packaging, cardboard necessary for the execution of the order. Each printing process, such as printing, die-cutting, foil application, varnishing or gluing, requires a certain amount of sheets, just for the so-called machine tool. This serves to set up the machine appropriately so that the subsequent process is correct. One of the most critical processes is the printing process. Obtaining the correct colour print requires a number of steps and calibrations. The cost of the device is one of the most important components of the cost of a print order, next to the price of making the printing form and the value of printing a single copy. By using HQSM technology we are able to significantly reduce the amount of waste paper because the raster used and its characteristics are more precise in reproducing details and colours.
The high quality of our products is also our most important goal. We believe that our Dear Customers have the right to be fully satisfied with the results of our work. That is why we always strive for printing perfection. The biggest challenge for us is our obsession with perfection. This is what prompted us to consistently build the Laboratory of Perfect Printing. One of its achievements is the HQSM technology. Thanks to the proper development of graphic files in our graphic studio, as well as subsequent digital processes up to the production of printing forms, we have achieved incredible print quality, compared to other technologies commonly used today. Our products are much more detailed and the colours are better saturated. Below is a comparison of the same prints before and after the application of HQSM technology.

The use of HQSM technology reveals details previously only seen in the file.
Holi festival
HQSM significantly increases colour dynamic range.
Chameleon
HQSM technology allows a much higher contrast with less ink.
Market stall
Colour and detail reproduction at an unprecedented level.
In addition, HQSM technology offers our customers an effective method of marking, identifying and verifying the authenticity of products. By using a special rastering system, we are able to encode information in the product graphics. At the customer's request, we can prepare the graphics of his packaging so that it can be encoded, and we can insert a special graphic element that will contain the code.
This field is impossible to copy. Forgery of the raster structure is not feasible, and the only way to forge it is for the forger to have access to the complete raster technology. For in any other case, the reproduced image has the raster structure with which it was reproduced and which is different from the one used.
The field may look like the one below to the user, but it could just as well be hidden in a colourful graphic.

About us
MDM - Druk is a company that achieves perfect results thanks to a passionate focus on customer expectations. That is why our company is growing dynamically. We started modestly on 3 September 1996 with a small plant, which was located in a small room of 20 m2 in Przeźmierowo. Today we have 110 times more space. However, we remember that first moment when three partners (Maciej Sierpiński, Dariusz Kowalczyk and Mariusz Kowalczyk) decided to set up a printing house with high hopes and iron determination. We succeeded. For us - flesh and blood printers - the most important thing from the start was to be specific. As we already had a room, we had to get the machines. The first machines we used to start our own printing business were a Romajor 313, a Romajor 314 and a KRAUZE manual cutter.

HQSM is an advanced and unique technology that allows you to check the originality of your product. It requires an Android or iOS phone and the included macro lens to work. You need to follow a few steps to prepare your system for scanning.
1. Download and install the HQSM app. You can find it in the App Store (iOS) or Play Store (Android).
2. Find and open the downloaded application using the icon. Once the app is launched, the system will ask for access to location and camera services. The "Only when using the app" function should be active.
3. When you open the app, you need to register or create an account.
4. For system and data security reasons, your account must be validated in our internal system. Once your account has been verified and approved (you will be notified by email, sent to the address you provided during registration), you will be able to log into the system. Verification and approval can take up to 16 working hours.
5. Click the "Scan" button and point the camera at the EAN barcode. The system will automatically find it and retrieve its value.
6. The system will display data about the identified product. To find out where the coded field is located, click on the "Move the lens closer to the check mark" button at the bottom of the screen.
7. The location of the hidden coded box will be displayed on the screen. You can now attach the macro lens that came with the kit.
8. Move the lens closer to the coded area indicated in the manual. Zoom in and focus. The entire coded area should be in the lens. When you zoom in, you will see the coded objects. They must all be on the screen. When you are ready, press "scan". You can follow the validation process, for example in the History tab. The process itself can take anywhere from a few tens of seconds to several minutes.
And that is all! It's that simple!
